Weekly Rumors: IV

Friday, March 13th, 2009

Some crazy rumors have been floating around the sports world. Take them or leave them, remember that these are just rumors. Don’t ask for the source, we won’t tell you, just know that we heard them at some point from someone…or the tiny little voices in our heads.

If rumors are correct circling new NHL rules, we might see more fighting while the game is in progress.

NHL Retooling Their Game
It’s not a secret to anyone that the NHL struggles to get new viewers. There is a very small market of fans that love the NHL, but the majority consider it no more of a professional sport than curling. The NHL is well aware of their situation and has made attempts to make hockey more exciting to draw more fans by making new rules to increase scoring. They have been able to do just that, but it has not been enough to increase viewership to their initial expectations. Rumor has it that the NHL is thinking of making more amendments to their rules and procedures. Among the tweaks includes a larger goal, allowing fights during the game, and have a non-partisan “bouncer” that skates around aimlessly and checks players from both teams. While some are highly critical of these new proposals, saying they might as well call their new league the “XFL,” the NHL has to do something. At the rate they are going, Lord Stanley’s Cup will lose it’s value and the “Big Gulp” will have a better reputation.

NBA Players To Take Pay-cut
Much like several companies, the NBA is struggling right now and rapidly losing revenue. The average fan no longer has the time or money to go to a game, which is evidenced by a vast decrease in attendance this year. There have been several possible solutions that have been presented to commissioner David Stern and his staff. One possible solution is to lower ticket prices and concession prices, but they decided a game is not a game without a $6 drink and a $4 hot dog. Lowering those prices would take away from the integrity of the game. It has been rumored that the NBA has opted to propose a decrease in players salaries as the solution to their mounting problems. So far there has been a very positive response to the idea, several players said they would be more than willing to give up part of their salary if it meant satisfying more fans and benefitting the NBA. One player said, “If it means giving up the money to buy another ridiculously expensive car that I will never drive to help the NBA and it’s fans, then I’m all for it.”

NCAA To Expand Tournament Field
For as long as I can remember, the NCAA tournament field has always consisted of 64 teams. This year the NCAA is getting a lot of flack about 64 not being enough teams. With the unfairness of the BCA being magnified this year in college football, it’s only expected that people would also attack March Madness. It was being rumored that the NCAA was reconsidering the way it organize it’s yearly tournament. Nobody is exactly sure how they would reorganize it, which leads many to believe that they would not. After careful consideration, the NCAA decided that their tournament was completely fair. Think about it real hard…every school does have a chance. With so many automatic bids for winning even the smallest of conferences, any team that wins their conference tournament conceivably has a chance to win the National Title. Let this rumor be laid to rest.
